Explanation of Significant Differences for the Callahan Mining Co. Superfund Site, Brooksville, ME

In May 2026, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) published an Explanation of Significant Differences (ESD) for the Callahan Mine Superfund site, located in Brooksville, ME. The ESD outlines a change to the original cleanup plan selected by EPA in 2009 to address contaminated soil and sediment at the site to protect public health and the environment. The ESD documents 2 changes to the remedy to (1) include modification of ecological risk cleanup levels regarding sediment contained within the permanently flooded areas of the site and (2) the addition of Federal Floodplain/wetland regulations as applicable or relevant and appropriate requirements.
